June 29 - Shackford Head State Park

It was another gloomy day. A bit of rain but mostly very foggy. Our timing was a bit off today. It started to rain two whole minutes before we got back to the car.

We decided to head off to Shackford Head State Park after seeing some pictures in brochures last night. It turns out that it was not the best place to go in the fog. I thought we would see some more steep rocky walls but most of the views were long distance which didn’t exist today. You don’t know until you go… It was still a nice hike,

In straight line distance, the park is close but it took about 50 minutes to get there, the long way around.

I took this picture just to prove that we weren’t the only crazy ones. Another out of state license plate.

The hike was not long at only about 4 km but there was lots of ups and downs, tree roots and slick rocks. We were also dressed too warmly. It was nice to get out of the woods occasionally into the breeze.

Most of the trail was in the foggy woods.

This spot was called Shackford Head Overlook.

We could barely see the next hill.

At the entrance to the trail there had been a warning about fire ants. I saw a few of these brown piles and realized that they were moving.

A close up. We checked that none were crawling on us.

We took the branch trail out to one side of Ship Point.

And then climbed back up to the other side of the same point.

It’s hard to see but there is a, what looked to be, delicate arch in the center of the picture below. We wondered if people would try and walk over it.

Moving back up along the trail.

Back on the main trail.

We popped out in a few places for some cliff views.

But mainly when we walked across open areas and saw this.

I think there is a beach down there.

At Deep Cove we saw the pens where they farm the salmon.

Heading back to the car to have lunch.

There seem to be a lot of derelict boats everywhere. At least I think they are derelict. I assume they would be in the water by now if they were used.

I am fairly certain this one was not in use.

We drove through the town of Eastport. It got really foggy. There are the usual tourist shops along the waterfront.

We stopped at the IGA to get some fish for dinner and I spotted another local delicacy that I hadn’t tried yet.

It’s called a Whoopie Pie. A bun of chocolate cake with the icing in the middle. Even I could only eat a bit of it.

We went back to the RV to eat the salmon we had just bought, which we discovered was imported from Chile. Oh well.

  1. That foggy, root covered trail is magical! I love it!!! A fog shrouded Eastport looks like something out of a Stephen King novel! :-0
